Bermuda Institute of Ocean Science

Internship opportunities for undergraduate and recent graduate students. BIOS Research Internships may run for 8, 10 or 12 weeks in the summer. As a BIOS Research Intern you could have the opportunity to participate in an open-ocean research cruise aboard the R/V Atlantic Explorer, SCUBA dive on Bermuda’s coral reefs, learn progressive techniques from scientists at the forefront of their field, gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge laboratory equipment, and engage in workshops and seminars with peers and BIOS staff.  


Bimini Shark Lab (Bahamas)

 The Sharklab is looking for highly motivated, hardy people with a desire to work and gain experience with marine fauna and flora. Volunteers are integrated into all aspects of the station's workload and are expected to assist with fixing gillnets, cleaning toilets and cooking dinner, as well as tagging and measuring large sharks! Internships range in length from 2 – 12 months.


Blue Ocean Society (USA)

Blue Ocean Society are looking for enthusiastic, motivated people to join us for 10-12 week sessions throughout the year. This internship will give you the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in whale research, data collection, educational techniques and the inner workings of a non-profit organization. 

Caño Palma Biological Station (Costa Rica)

Offers a number of internships, including turtle internships. Minimum commitment 6 weeks. Previous biology fieldwork and leadership experience required. All training provided. 


Cape Eluthera Institute (Bahamas)

CEI internships offer the chance to gain hands-on experience of research related to marine island ecosystems and their conservation, and environmental education in an amazing location. Applicants should be 19 or over and studying an undergraduate degree in a biological related field, or have previous research experience and an active interest in marine or ecological research.

Centre of Conservation of Manatees (Puerto Rico)

The Puerto Rico Manatee Conservation Center (PRMCC) and the Caribbean Stranding Network at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico announces the availability of four 2-month volunteer (unpaid) internship positions in three periods per year. The PRMMC conducts conservation efforts on behalf of endangered Antillean manatees in four modalities: (1) Rescue and Stranding Response, (2) Rehabilitation and Veterinary Care, (3) Population Research, and (4) Community Outreach and Education.


Centre for Coastal Studies (USA)

The Center for Coastal Studies (CCS) offers a Humpback Whale Research Internship. Interns would participate in humpback whale field research in the near- and offshore waters of the Gulf of Maine, including a multiple-week survey of US and Canadian waters. Applicants must have completed at least their sophomore year in college with a major in a relevant scientific discipline. Post-grads and graduate students are welcome to apply.  

Combe Martin Wildlife Park (UK)

Combe Martin Wildlife Park are seeking animal care interns to join our team. The successful applicants will assist our staff in looking after a range of animals including tropical birds, birds of prey, small omnivores and livestock. This position would be perfect for recent graduates looking to gain experience in animal husbandry or for students seeking work based learning placements.


Cornish Seal Sanctuary (UK)

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Cornwall, UK, is seeking applicants for internships working with captive and wild pinnipeds (seals, fur seals and sea lions). The internships require a full-time commitment of 40 hours per week over 12 consecutive weeks in either the autumn (October-December) or the winter (January-March). Volunteer and work experience opportunities also available.


Dolphin Research Centre (USA)

Internships at DRC (Florida) are an exciting way to develop career skills as well as an opportunity to get “behind the scenes” to see how a marine mammal facility operates. They involve concentration in specific departments, normally last 16 to 18 weeks and are held throughout the year.

Dolphins Plus (USA)

Dolphins Plus offers a variety of research and animal care internships, focusing on hands-on training, innovative techniques and cutting-edge research. 

Florida Aquarium (USA)  

Internships are designed to provide college students and recent college graduates with an exclusive and hands-on opportunity to gain experience in the aquarium industry. Internships run for 10 – 12 weeks.


Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (USA)

Fish and Wildlife Research Institute offers a variety of manatee internships including positions that work on photo identification and GIS projects in St. Petersburg, as well as positions that assist field stations with manatee rescue, carcass salvage, and research in other areas around the state.

Gili Shark Conservation (Indonesia)

Make a real difference in conservation through research and data collection and through local awareness events to help save the sharks of Indonesia. Divemaster Internship opportunities available. Internships vary in length.


Georgia Sea Grant Marine Education Internship (Georgia)

The Georgia Sea Grant Marine Education Internship is designed for recent college graduates who would like teaching experience in marine science and coastal ecology. Four interns will be selected for the period of September 2017 to August 2018.


Gnaraloo Wilderness Foundation (Australia)

Interns undertake daily surveys of turtle nesting and feral animal activities in the monitored rookeries, community and school participation with the program, data analysis, scientific reporting and other of office work. The four available internship positions are for scientists seeking commercial experience and professional development. Candidates with Honour or Master degrees in the scientific field will be favorably viewed, particularly those with some commercial and project experience post degree.

Loggerhead Marine Life Centre (USA)

Loggerhead marine life centre offers internships in Sea Turtle Rehabilitation and Sea Turtle Nesting Season to current undergraduates or recent graduates with a Biological Science related degree.


Marine Biological Association (UK)

The Marine Biological Association (Plymouth) offers a limited number of work placements for young marine biologists. 

Marine Mammal Care Centre (USA)  

Marine Mammal Care Center Los Angeles offers hands-on Unpaid Husbandry Internship opportunities to: undergraduate college students; college graduates; veterinary students and other individuals age 18 years and older.


Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (USA)

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute’s Summer Internship Program provides an opportunity for talented college students (undergraduate and graduate) and educators to come to MBARI for a period of 10 weeks to work on a specific project under MBARI staff supervision.


Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium (USA)

Mote offers a variety of internship opportunities for undergraduate/graduate students and recent college graduates interested in a career in the ocean sciences. Internship scholarships are available.


Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium (USA)

The Manatee Research Program studies several aspects of the biology of manatees inhabiting the waters of Southwest Florida, including population dynamics, population genetics, habitat use, distributional patterns and social behavior. Internships are available during all four seasons and must be a MINIMUM of 12 weeks.  Hours are typically Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5pm, although some longer days may be required for field work. 


National Marine Aquarium (UK)

The National Marine Aquarium (Plymouth) offers industrial placements and husbandry internships. Husbandry internships allow volunteers to immerse themselves within the husbandry team for a minimum period of 3 months. The intern will assist a particular biologist in the day to day running and development of their area.


New England Aquarium (USA)

Animal husbandry, health and research internship positions (18 years and older) are available for the January term, spring, summer, and fall for undergraduates, graduates, and career changers. Spring, summer and fall internships are 12 to 16 weeks long, while January term internships range between 4 and 6 weeks and require a minimum of 125 total hours.


Ocean Exploration Trust

The Nautilus Science and Engineering Internship Program aims to train undergraduate and graduate students studying ocean science, engineering and video/film in the at-sea environment. Intern positions entail 2-5 week periods working aboard E/V Nautilus as Data Loggers, ROV Pilots, or Video Engineers.


Reef Environmental Education Foundation (USA)

The REEF Marine Conservation Internship provides an array of diverse experiences including SCUBA diving, outreach and education, data collection, non-profit operations, event planning, graphic design, social media development, and public speaking. 4-month long internship in Florida.


Seal Rescue Ireland (UK)

Seal Rescue Ireland offers several seasonal internships. A minimum of 12 weeks commitment for internship positions is required & interns are expected to be passionate and self-motivated as the days are long, sometimes 9 -12 hours.


Shoals Marine Laboratory (USA)

Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML) summer internships are specifically designed for undergraduate college students. Student interns work directly with mentors and SML scientists to conduct research experiments and projects. 3 categories; Biological Research, Outreach, Sustainable Engineering.

Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (USA)

The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center's (SERC) Internship Program offers undergraduate and beginning graduate students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the fields of environmental research and public engagement. This program enables students to work on independent research projects under the direction of a SERC mentor. 

Stone Laboratory (USA)

Stone Lab’s Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Scholarship Program is a competitive comprehensive research internship that attracts students from across the country to learn how to conduct real, in-the-field research alongside top scientists. Over 5 weeks, participants use scientific equipment, explore the Lake Erie islands, and collect important data to help solve the most pressing issues for the Great Lakes region.


Whale Lab (Canada) 

Enthusiastic individuals with a keen interest in nature and science are invited to discover the challenges of marine field research along Canada's coastal rainforest through SEACR's Marine Research Intern Program! During the course of this 2- or 4-week program, interns will have the rare opportunity to acquire valuable skills in field data collection and handling, methods in marine field research, and the use of scientific equipment.
